Years ago, a small amazingly productive chicken breed was imported from Italy through the port of Livorno. "Leghorn" became the Anglicized word for that port and the breed. Supermarket eggs are almost always laid by White Leghorns or hybrids developed from them. Hens lay uniform white eggs of the highest quality. Their need for space and their feed-to-egg conversion ratio are excellent, holding down the cost of egg production. White Leghorns are active and thrive when they have ample space to forage and free-range.
White Leghorn hens lay approximately 325 eggs per year.
